Paper

Paper is an important material. Paper production requires certain procedures to follow. First, trees are cut and logs are sent by truck or train to paper mills, Second, in the mills the logs are put through a drum like machine called a “debarker” which removes bark from the logs. Third, either of the two things happens to the log; they are ground up or cut into small chips. The ground wood is used for light, ragged paper on which newspaper are printed. The wood that has been cut into small chips is cleaned and then put into huge tanks. Here the chips are cooked by steam, with water and chemicals. Fourth, the soaking fibers are cleaned and put into tanks to be stored. What happens to them depends in the type of paper that is to be made. Color maybe added, and sizing is done which gives the paper a smooth surface. Lastly, the fibers are put through more machines. They cut to the right length, formed into sheets and pressed.
